 Distance Learning Tips and Readiness

This course is a combination correspondence and on-line training.  Follow the course syllabus included in your supplemental package.

One of the major advantages of taking a course via the Internet is that it is time and place independent.  This means that you can "attend class" at anytime at home, work, school, or elsewhere.  The aspect of this advantage is that many students on the Internet have a hard time "attending class" on a regular basis partly because they don't fully understand the concept of learning via the Internet. To be successful in these course methods you need to establish good study skill habits.

The following habits will help you become a successful correspondence and Internet student:

bullet

Schedule your "class" time weekly, just as if you were physically coming into class.

bullet

Try to do all of your on-line work and study in the same place.

bullet

Establish a schedule of when you will be on-line and when you will study.  Stick to that schedule.

bullet

Schedule your learning when you will not be interrupted.

bullet

Schedule your on-line time so that you will be on-line 3-4 times a week.  This is important for a number of reasons.  Your instructor may be sending you email which you might need for your work.

To "turn in" your work, you will complete your assignments and submit on-line.

A  successful distance learning student will understand the importance of following a schedule.

You will need some basic skills utilizing the Internet, email and Microsoft Word. Following are some skills you should be familiar with:

bullet

Complete and submit on-line forms

bullet

Utilize email effectively
bullet

Send, open, reply to and forward messages

bullet

Send, open and save attachments

bullet

Utilize search engines
bullet

Finding websites

bullet

Doing on-line research

bullet

Click on icons, buttons, image maps, and hyperlinks

bullet

Click and paste between applications
bullet

Microsoft Word, email and web applications

bullet

Create and use bookmarks

If you are not computer savvy and not comfortable with these skills, we suggest you develop these skills prior to taking an on-line course.

There are many advantages in participating in an on-line course.  Some include:

bullet

A distance learning course can be done anywhere and at any time.

bullet

Students save money by not having to commute to class thus saving time, gasoline, childcare, and travel expenses.

bullet

Distance learning takes advantage of new technologies and encourages students to be innovative

bullet

Students who are motivated and/or quick learners can move ahead at a faster rate than in a normal in-class setting.

bullet

Because most contact with instructors will be done via email, especially in on-line courses, messages can be sent at any time day or night. Keep in mind, however, response may not be immediate.
